This isn’t the electric vehicle that Talybont Energy is going to get but it’s the very attractively priced Zoe – the latest from Renault. I like the fact that Renault will rent you a long distance car if the Zoe is your only car and you need to go on a long journey. The Zoe range is 80-120 miles and it has a fast charger.

New use for old electric car batteries

This interesting new R&D programme could potentially solve two problems – how to re-use batteries from electric vehicles and how homes might store (or effectively time shift) power generated when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing (i.e. not necessarily when you most need it).

New 100% Electric Renault ZE Kangoo Van for community use

Talybont Energy is delighted to announce that we have ordered an 100% Electric Renault ZE Kangoo Van to replace electric Bluebell in our community car share scheme.

The van has greater range (60-90 miles), faster performance, a very comfortable ride and opens up new uses by individuals and businesses who say they would find a load-carrying van or 5 seater people carrier occasionally useful. The van element seems to carry particular appeal as most people don’t own a van but need one occasionally.

The plan with the van is to offer zero carbon car hire to community members who would like to reduce the carbon footprint of their travel or who occasionally need an extra car. The idea is to keep the usage charges low enough to motivate use whilst still covering the running costs of the 2 cars.

Unfortunately, the van won’t be ready until May. More news then.

Meanwhile, we have arranged to donate the sadly defunct Bluebell to Cardiff University who plan to use her for educational and research purposes.

Talybont Energy test drive a ZE Kangoo Van

Since the death of Bluebell, our Talybont community electric car, we have been exploring what the replacement vehicle might be. Because we generate electricity, both via our turbine and via Henderson Hall PV panels, we are keen to have another electric vehicle for the community to use.

We have recently had the loan of Renault’s electric Kangoo van from Callow Marsh in Hereford. We took it on runs to Hereford, Merthyr, Ebbw Vale and Abergavenny and were very impressed with its performance and comfort. We are hoping that, if we decide to get one, it might be useful to local businesses who need to short runs to pick up supplies.
